Slain photojournalist Danish Siddiqui honoured with second Pulitzer, among 4 Indians to win reward this year

NEW YORK: Slain photojournalist Danish Siddiqui is among 4 Indians honoured with the distinguished Pulitzer Reward 2022 in the function photography classification. Siddiqui and his coworkers Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo and Amit Dave from the Reuters news firm won the award, announced on Monday, for “images of Covid’s toll in India that stabilized intimacy and destruction, while offering viewers an increased sense of location”, according to The Pulitzer Prizes site.

Mumbai: Homages paid to photographer Danish Siddiqui Siddiqui, 38, was on task in Afghanistan last year when he died. The award-winning reporter was killed in July last while covering clashes between Afghan soldiers and the Taliban in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city.
This is for the 2nd time that Siddiqui has won the Pulitzer Prize. He was honoured with the distinguished award in 2018 as part of the Reuters group for their coverage of the Rohingya crisis. He had actually extensively covered the Afghanistan conflict, the Hong Kong protests and other major events in Asia, Middle East, and Europe.
Siddiqui graduated with a degree in Economics from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi. He had a degree in Mass Communication from the AJK Mass Communication Research Study Centre at Jamia in 2007.
He started his career as a tv news correspondent, switched to photojournalism, and signed up with Reuters as an intern in 2010.
Marcus Yam of the Los Angeles Times bagged the award in the Breaking News photography classification “for raw and immediate images of the United States departure from Afghanistan that capture the human expense of the historical modification in the country”.
Yam’s work was moved from Feature Photography by the jury.
Win McNamee, Drew Angerer, Spencer Platt, Samuel Corum and Jon Cherry of Getty Images likewise won the award in the Breaking News photography category for their “extensive and consistently fascinating photos of the attack on the United States Capitol”.
The Washington Post bagged the Pulitzer Prize in civil service journalism for its protection of the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol.
According to the award committee, the newspaper “compellingly told and vividly provided account of the attack on Washington on January 6, 2021, providing the public with an extensive and unflinching understanding of among the country’s darkest days”.
The Pulitzer Board awarded a special citation to the journalists of Ukraine for their “guts, endurance, and commitment to honest reporting during (President) Vladimir Putin‘s callous invasion of their country and his propaganda war in Russia”.
“In spite of bombardment, abductions, profession, and even deaths in their ranks, they have continued their effort to offer an accurate photo of an awful reality, doing honour to Ukraine and to journalists all over the world,” the committee stated.
The Pulitzer Prizes were established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American reporter and paper publisher, who left cash to Columbia University upon his death in 1911. A part of his bequest was used to found the School of Journalism in 1912 and establish the Pulitzer Prizes, which were very first granted in 1917.
The 19-member Pulitzer Board is composed of leading journalists and news executives from media outlets across the United States, along with 5 academics or individuals in the arts. The dean of Columbia’s journalism school and the administrator of the rewards are non-voting members. The chair rotates yearly to the most senior member or members.
