NEW YORK: Slain photojournalist Danish Siddiqui is among four Indians honoured with the prestigious Pulitzer Reward 2022 in the function photography category. Siddiqui and his coworkers Adnan Abidi, Sanna Irshad Mattoo and Amit Dave from the Reuters news agency won the award, revealed on Monday, for “pictures of Covid’s toll in India that stabilized intimacy and devastation, while using viewers a heightened sense of location”, according to Pulitzer Prizes site.
Siddiqui, who died in July 2021 while covering the war in Afghanistan, took a number of the photos, consisting of an aerial shot of fires from a mass cremation illuminating a Delhi housing estate. One photo shows a gasping female getting oxygen in a cars and truck in a car park, because of the lack of area in healthcare facilities. Another reveals a 19-year-old in a protective fit kneeling before his mom’s body after it is placed on a pyre. Showing that nobody felt safe from the illness, Siddiqui also took a photo of an ash-covered Hindu holy man putting on a mask before a routine dip in Ganga.
In western India, seasoned photojournalist Dave took a picture of a veil-covered brick kiln employee having her temperature level signed in her hut throughout a vaccination drive.
Mattoo visited one of the most remote vaccination camps in the nation, on a steep Himalayan hillside. Without any roads suitable for cars, she went up by pony and travelled to the website in Lidderwat, about 3,400 metres high, to take the photo of a shepherd getting his shot.
Abidi took a number of the photographs mentioned by the Pulitzer Reward jury. He travelled outdoors Delhi to discover a town where a male had actually dragged a cot into the shade from the summer sun so his other half could depend on comfort prior to receiving rehydration fluid. “This is a homage to him (Siddiqui) from the entire Reuters team,” said Abidi, who has been on 2 previous Pulitzer Prize-winning teams, one with Siddiqui. “I truly miss him … I wish he was here with us.”
