Pakistan: 6 get death for lynching Sri Lankan nationwide
Priyantha Kumara, a Sri Lankan national was lynched in Sialkot on allegations of blasphemy LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Monday sentenced six people to death and 7 others to life imprisonment for their involvement in the lynching of a Sri Lankan nationwide over alleged blasphemy.
The Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore also handed down two-year sentence each to remaining 67 other suspects.
Judge Natasha Nasim, who held the trial procedures in-camera inside the high-security Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, on a daily basis, revealed the verdict in the presence of the suspects.
The judge, nevertheless, did not reveal the decision of nine juvenile suspects, whose trial is yet to be finished.
A mob of over 800 men consisting of supporters of hardline Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) supposedly attacked a garment factory and lynched its basic supervisor Priyantha Kumara, 47, and burned his body over accusations of blasphemy on December 3, in Sialkot district, some 100 kms from Lahore.
The incident saw prevalent outrage and condemnation throughout Pakistan with politicians, scholars and civil society members requiring speedy penalty to be portioned to the wrongdoers.
