Ola CEO delegates everyday operations to CFO

BENGALURU: In the middle of negative publicity surrounding EVs and their batteries, Ola founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal stated he’s handing over some duty of everyday operations to the company’s CFO Arun G R, so that he can focus more on the engineering, product and team-building parts of the company.
“To drive scale, speed and quality, Ola has actually expanded group CFO Arun G R’s role to help and support Bhavish Aggarwal in daily operations across the group,” a spokesperson for the company stated.
In the middle of rumours of Aggarwal stepping down from his post permanently, the Ola CEO on Tuesday tweeted: “Checks out like I’m retiring! Not true. Arun is a terrific leader & & he’ll help me handle Ola’s ops. We will speed up enthusiastic new projects like our cars and truck, cell, gigafactory, and so on, & & deepen concentrate on tech & & engineering. More quickly doubling down on constructing the future here in India, at Ola!”
Lots of think Aggarwal’s move is an effort to communicate that Ola is taking the issues around EVs seriously. There have been a number of occurrences of EV batteries capturing fire throughout the country over the last couple of weeks, including one on an Ola S1 electric scooter in Pune on March 26. On April 9, 20 electrical scooters from Jitendra EV ignited in Nashik while they were being transferred. A guy and his child also died from suffocation in Tamil Nadu after their EV scooter appeared in flames in March.
However batteries are not the only problem. An Ola consumer recently tweeted that his scooter began moving in reverse even though he had accelerated to take it forward.
Much of these are severe style, software and screening concerns. Internationally, fires breaking out over incorrectly manufactured lithium-ion batteries are a rare sight, which is why stakeholders in the EV market have been so shocked by the recent accidents, since it has the potential to seriously hinder the prospects of the nascent industry.
Ola has already built a large EV two-wheeler factory in Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu, and has committed to take it to a capacity of 10-million units a year, which might make it the world’s biggest two-wheeler factory. Making that investment effective depends crucially on the product being incredibly trustworthy.
