A new research study has found that bacteria alter their swimming pattern while moving through tight spaces. The scientists, from the University of Hawaii in the US, stated the unexpected change in the behaviour of bacteria has come as a surprise. They discovered that the bacteria made a beeline, and swam in a straight line, to escape from the confinement rather than open spaces. In open areas, they appeared to meander with no obvious pattern, changing their instructions arbitrarily and at random moments. Germs live symbiotically on or within the bodies of almost all organisms.The researchers hope their findings might assist comprehend how germs reside in the human microbiome. Microorganisms regularly take complicated paths, even squeezing through narrow openings in tissues. This study shows that tight areas might work as a cue for germs on how to browse complex environments.For their research study, the researchers used Vibrio fischeri, a rod-shaped bacterium found internationally in marine environments.

The Hawaiian bobtail squid, Euprymna scolopes, forms a special cooperative relationship with Vibrio fischeri, which has a whip-like tail that it utilizes to swim to particular locations in the squid’s body.
