Fb To Probe Blocking Of Ex-Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar’s Web page

Kumar’s official web page on Fb was blocked and later unblocked on Thursday

Kumar has alleged that Fb India blocked her web page as Bihar goes to polls in 12 days

Earlier a narrative revealed in WSJ on Fb triggered a political storm in India

Social media behemoth Fb on Friday stated that it’ll examine the blocking of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar’s web page on the platform.

The event comes a day after Kumar’s official web page on Fb was blocked and later unblocked.

Kumar had on October 15 accused Fb India for blocking her official web page earlier than the upcoming Bihar Meeting elections (October 28)..

“Facebook page BLOCKED! Crushing the voice of Opposition – an assault on democracy. It cannot be a mere coincidence that Facebook blocks my page just before the Bihar elections,” Ms. Kumar stated on Twitter within the afternoon, and shared a screenshot of her Fb web page that stated: “Your page has been unpublished.

In another tweet, she said after much protest, her Facebook page had been unblocked.

Over the past few months, Facebook India has been facing heat over its decisions. Earlier, a story published in The Wall Street Journal, titled “Facebook’s Hate-Speech Rules Collide With Indian Politics”, alleged that the corporate’s public coverage head for India, Ankhi Das, had refused to take down incendiary posts from politicians of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Social gathering (BJP), to hunt favours from the Indian authorities. 

The story had triggered a political storm in India, with the BJP and the Indian Nationwide Congress (INC), accusing Fb of harbouring a bias. 

Quickly after the publication of the (WSJ) story, Congress wrote a letter to Fb, accusing it of pandering to the needs of the ruling celebration for favours and urging the corporate’s high administration to conduct an inner probe into the matter. 

Virtually two weeks later, Union Regulation Minister and BJP member Ravi Shankar Prasad, in a letter to Fb CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accused Fb of getting a bias in opposition to the ruling celebration and its staff of abusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

In September, a group of civil rights organisations from internationally wrote a letter to Zuckerberg and Fb COO Sheryl Sandberg, demanding Das to be despatched on a depart of absence till the corporate completes an inner probe into the matter.
