6 desis held trying to enter United States from Canada illegally
NEW YORK: The US Customs and Border Protection said that the border patrol representatives have collared 7 people– six Indians and one American citizen– from a sinking boat in Akwesasne during an unsuccessful attempt to be smuggled into America from Canada early on Thursday. All the six Indians– in the age of 19 to 21 years– have been charged with Improper Entry by Alien in violation of US law. The United States citizen has been charged with Alien Smuggling, which carries a charge of approximately ten years in prison for each violation and a fine.
Recently, suspicious activity was reported to the Akwesasne Mohawk Authorities Service, which alerted the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department about a boat consisting of several people taking a trip from Canada near Ontario towards the US. Coming to the scene, the cops discovered the vessel sinking in the Saint Regis river in Akwesasne and raised alarm. Already, one of the travelers had managed to reach the coastline. Soon after, the other 6 “distressed subjects” were saved. Authorities stated there were no life coats or other security devices onboard the sinking boat. All the seven people on the boat were dealt with for hypothermia. Upon their release, they were arrested by Border Patrol agents and carried to the Border Patrol Station for processing.
Chief of cops Matthew Rourke of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Cops Department stated cooperation in between police and rescue services avoided what might have been a “horrific tragedy”.
In January a household of four Indians were discovered dead near Emerson, Manitoba, around 12 metres from the Canada-US border. The family was trying to cross over into the US on foot from Canada. 7 other Indian nationals, who had actually gotten in the US unlawfully around the exact same time, were jailed near the US-Canada border.
